I like Nitram's suggestion of removing the background of speech bubbles and outlining the words. This might be a satisfying solution for us all!

As long as we can tell who is speaking without having huge speech bubbles, I'm game.

Updating Java

Launching a new loader

Warping to a different place to see if it wasn't just a glitch on noobia

Unfortunately, none of these things worked. I suggested a full uninstall and clean re-installation. The player decided to install the client on a Windows desktop.
