Twice now, as I approach the fire near the workshop in Troll's Bane, the client slows to a crawl, and other player's text scrolls by at a rate of one line every 10 seconds or so. The load on my CPU is low, and my computer otherwise reacts normally - it's only the Illarion window that has the problem...

Well, playing under Windows wasn't much better. most of the time it's fine, but every now and then when I'm moving around, the client doesn't respond to my keypresses for 5-10 seconds. I'll try and get used to it.
