Hows about an autosave every hour or something like that.
Example:
Player 1 logs in at 13:34
Player 2 logs in at 14:10
Player 1 autosaves at 14:34
Player 2 autosaves at 15:10

Or autosave everytime you pick up an item.

Well, I still didn't play since about...The mid/end of August last year, but, I appear to be addicted again.

If we can get a player economy going, we could phase out the NPC's, but we would still need some way of bringing silver and coppers 'into' the game as well as out of it.
