Stephen was preparing for war since about 5 weeks, when the dwarves insulted him. He would've been able to attack within 1 day or even the same day.

Neither Varshikar, nor Tol Vanima, nor Greenbriar got ever attacked by stephen. And also, when stephen was attacking silverbrand the first time, there where exactly two warriors in silverbrand and stephen had about - lemme think - five uber chars with magical weapons and 20 avarage warriors? The reason, why the dwarves have their golems is, because stephen and everyone were attaking silverbrand. The dwarves were completly unable to protect their selves and Irmorom was heavily angry. So he sent them the golems to protect them, until they are strong enough to do that, on their own
