Martin, try disable your "Power Management" or what ever they called on your version.  (I have a chinese machine infront  of me right now....)    HDD is usually set to shut down after 15 ~ 20 min of lack of activities.  I've found my win 98 machine IMPOSSIBLE to responde right after that. ...
