In the deep mines of some of the mountains, you can find rich ledges of Copper and Iron Ore, and Coal. Also, different Gems, Raw Stone and Gold can be found with some luck. Some old legends tell about a curious new metal. It is called Merinium. They say it reaches the world when a star falls down from the sky.
The knowledge about how to get these raw materials is a real science. Not all rocks look the same or produce the same materials. Miners with the experience about the best ledges can be rich men or women.
The most important tool of the miner is his pick-axe. It is used to smash rocks into little pieces. With the method of "trial and error", it is easy to find out where and in what rocks raw materials can be found and where not. But rocks do not only consist of gems and ores. There is also blind and empty rock, raw stones, which can be collected and used for building projects. Pick-axes will break with enough use, so carry a spare.

A shovel can be useful as well. It is used to collect coarse 'raw' sand in the desert and clay in the swamps. Both materials can be found next to rocks. Stand a space away from a rock, and right-click the shovel, select 'use with' then right-click the space next to the rock and select 'use'. You will automatically dig until something happens. Digging increases skill in Mining.

The coarse sand must be 'filtered' using the coarse sand in your belt, a wooden shovel in your hand, and a sieve which is a static tool. Stand in front of the sieve and 'use' the wooden shovel. The coarse sand will turn into fine sand, ready for use by glassblowers and building materials.

There is one mine east of Troll's Bane which is called "The Copper Mine", there is only iron and copper there unfortunately, but you can find both coal and iron in the north mine which is north of Troll's Bane and even further north of the Grey Refuge (big castle north of Troll's Bane.)
There is also a mine in Varshikar which has many types of ore.
