I'm thinking about how disrespectful my entire family is and wondering how I got so lucky to have missed getting hit by the disrespectful bullet.

No. You weren't even home. It was because Robert and Mommie and Bobby and Auntie Dawn were being mean about gram at the dinner table and she wasn't even there to defend herself.

Foosball is what bars are for. Besides, it's well known that you get better at Foosball the more drunk you are... or at least it seems so.

I think that's foolish, Hermie.

Any specific reason for thinking that way?

I mean, I know countries go to war I might not agree with, but not being in the military wouldnt really change that. I know I'd be expected to kill people and that I might end up dying myself before I even end up in one of those situations. If I joined as a technician then I could learn a trade, and since I still live at home I'd be able to save up lots of money. Also I'd be kept in good physical shape and I'd learn self discipline etc.

Anyway..

Think long and hard. If thats what you want, Hermie then do it. If thats the direction you want you life to go in then do it. But knowd that I'll miss you!

I'm thinking that I didn't get enough coupons this week in the newspaper. I want more coupons!!!!!!

"Self discipline, honor, courage, commitment," and all that recruiter jazz junk looks appealing until you're done with basic training and you're just looking for $ and maybe a girlfriend. You should truly be interested in military before considering joining.

Not that it's a bad thing. You could like it, but it's not something you can just decide to drop if it "isn't your thing." Years-long contracts are hefty business.

Also, don't be entirely convinced that you'll be far in the rear if you take up a trade as opposed to infantry. The instructors to the intel school here, for example, have all been on at least 1 or 2 full combat tours because it's their job to directly support ground troops to prove that the "product" of their work is right on the point. That's the purpose of the jobs here anyway - to support the grunts.

But all that can also depend on what branch you join. Army and Marines, for example, are infantry-based branches, where Navy and Air Force is more technical-trade friendly (but even a lot of airmen and sailors have gone to Iraq).

(Question - can you guys choose to get into your Royal Marines after school, or is that a corps that requires prior service?)

Didn't mean to be long winded. I was just interested in your consideration.

In the worst case, you will have to shoot at living people, and living people will shoot at you then.

Not a good option. Some possibilities should really be avoided.

It could happen.

On the other hand, good opportunities to gain stuff that civilians can never get are present in the military. It's just really up to him if he wants to commit some years into it.

Edit: One of the "intangible" benefits I've taken notice to is "thick skin." In other words, some jerk cuts Joe Schmoe in line, and Joe Schmoe normally being a nonconfrontational person doesn't say anything about it. Well, Joe Schmoe goes through basic training, and now the same jerk that cuts him in line will be called "a dick slapping douche bag" and Joe will get his spot back in line, somehow. A local taxi driver ripped me off by taking big circles about two weeks ago, and I threatened to call his cab company if I didn't get the right price. It worked. A year or two ago, I would've paid the unfair amount and just walked away.

Cool.

Or, you know, if gun fights interest you, you can go crazy and join the French Foreign Legion. Incredibly tough training, near suicidal braveness. :P

Van Damme sucks donkey balls and deserves to be kicked in the balls by a donkey.

Read up on the Foreign Legion though. They're a pretty interesting bunch, both historically and conduct wise. They seem to be considered "mercenaries" by some dudes, but they don't even get paid that much. And their loytalty to France is almost fanatic.

I am thinking that I should have gone to bed earlier, meaning I should have read the Shakespeare long before 12:30 last night, which means I should have taken myself away from the computer at a decent time. I think I procrastinate too much, and that I am not looking forward to the many hours I must spend on campus today. Need caffeine!!

I am thinking about this quote: "Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. "

*runs out in traffic* Oh.. wait, I am currently in Peterborough and they roll up the sidewalks at 5pm. Roughly 6 hours ago. Fine, it would have been poignant if I were at home in Toronto.
